Mckayla Wilkes stands for us.
Our campaign puts first those our County has left behind. That's because Mckayla is one of those people. Growing up in Southern Maryland, she didn't really care about politics, because her politicians gave no indication that they cared about her. Most politicians develop priorities based on the preferences of lobbyists and wealthy donors.
We can't afford that kind of politics anymore. We need a County Commissioner who hears our voices, feels our pain, and lives our struggles. This platform is designed to be responsive to you: the people of Charles County’s 3rd district. We developed it over the course of thousands of conversations with Charles County residents; during town hall meetings, conversations at the door, and chats over the phone. Your concerns, fears, and priorities must come first. We believe that every person and family deserves the health, housing, and financial security to live a dignified life. We believe that regular people should have power in their workplace and in their communities. And we believe that caring for the environment is a collective responsibility.
Community First
Enacting a moratorium on future data center construction and establishing a public task force (e.g. residents, advocates, and subject-matter experts) to study impacts and develop strong regulations for any possible future development.
Funding our Schools and Infrastructure
Requiring residential developers to pay increased fees so new growth directly supports public school construction, operation, modernization, and county infrastructure, rather than burdening existing residents.
Centering Youth Development
Creating a countywide youth services program that partners directly with young people to gather data and recommendations on the services, programs, and activities they want to see in their communities.
Housing Stability for Working Families
Implementing a countywide rent stabilization program and tenants union to protect renters, prevent displacement, and support long-term community stability.
Reinvesting Cannabis Revenue Locally
Directing tax revenue from marijuana sales toward public education and youth programming, ensuring those funds are used to strengthen opportunities for the next generation.
County Government Accountability
Supporting the establishment of an independent Office of Inspector General to investigate misuse and restore public trust.
